How I make homemade food for our cats
People often ask me what actually goes into the pouches. The short answer: real ingredients, no premixes, and lots of care. The longer answer is this post.
It starts with a balance
Cats are meat eaters, so most of every meal is animal protein. Here's the balance I cook to:
- Animal protein, about 75%: chicken, fish and eggs, the main bulk of every meal and their main source of energy and amino acids.
- Organ meats, about 10%: chicken liver for vitamin A and iron, and chicken heart for taurine and CoQ10.
- Natural fats, about 5%: egg yolk, salmon oil and coconut oil, for skin, coat and brain.
- Fibre, about 5%: pumpkin, gentle on digestion.
- Carbs, about 5%: a little oats or rice.
It's balanced the way AAFCO's guidelines recommend, using real ingredients instead of a powder from a packet.
The little extras
A few add-ons round every recipe off:
- Eggshell powder, for natural calcium.
- Seaweed, for iodine and trace minerals.
- Flaxseed powder, for omega-3 and fibre.
- Salmon oil, for omega-3, and extra on recovery or sensitive days.
Each bowl changes slightly from batch to batch, but it always stays balanced.
The tools I use
Nothing fancy, and that's the point:
- A measuring scale. Very important. Balance only works if you weigh, every single time.
- A masher. I mostly mash things and don't blend them, so the food keeps some texture and you can still see what's in it.
- Mixing bowls, lots of them.
- Airtight containers, so everything stays fresh until it's portioned.
Then each meal goes into its own pouch and straight into the freezer, so it reaches you as fresh as the day I cooked it.
Why I do it
I don't do this because it's easy. I do it because I've seen the difference: in their eyes, their energy, their quiet purrs after every meal. And every recipe goes past our own two first: Chi makes sure it smells interesting, and nothing leaves my kitchen without Nobita's calm, steady approval.
