Switching to fresh food: a slow 10-day plan, and what week one looks like
Switching to balanced homemade food is one of the best things you can do for your cats. But cats like to know what's in their bowl before they commit, so I always suggest going slowly. A slow transition is kinder on their tummies, and much less dramatic for you.
The 10-day plan
- Days 1–3: a quarter of my food, mixed into three quarters of the old food.
- Days 4–6: half and half.
- Days 7–9: three quarters of my food.
- Day 10: all mine.
If they turn their nose up at any point, go back a step for a couple of days and try again. On some days your cats will test you, and on some they will surprise you.
A few things that help
- Serve it at room temperature. Move the next day's pouches from the freezer to the fridge the night before. Cold food straight from the fridge is less tempting.
- Know how much they need. The feeding calculator works it out from their weight, age and whether they're neutered, then tells you how many pouches a day that is.
- Don't worry if the bowl looks smaller. Fresh food is denser, so a smaller portion fills them up and keeps them full for longer. One customer messaged me worried that her cat was eating less than before. He was simply getting what he needed from less. Watch their weight and energy rather than the size of the bowl.
What week one looked like for other cat parents
I don't make promises about what fresh food will do. I'd rather let the people who tried it tell you, in their own words:
"I've never seen them this excited about food or ever be leftovers. And they have energy for the whole day." (Jinji and Batman's dad)
"Trust me they're already running around playing like crazy." (a cat parent in Delhi)
"I see beautiful improvement in them! Especially in their stool. No smelly poop at all. And they stay full for hours!" (a cat parent of three)
Every cat is different, so give it the full ten days, and if your cat has a health condition, please check with your vet first.
Where to start
The Starter Kit has two of each of my six meals, which is how most of my customers begin: you'll find out which one your cats like best. And if you have a question along the way, message me on WhatsApp. I read every message myself. 🧡
